This episode highlights the Port Isabel Lighthouse, a Texas Historical Commission State Historical Site. Located near the base of the Queen Isabella Causeway across the bay from South Padre Island, the light house has been a dominant feature at the southern tip of the Texas gulf coast. It was built in 1853 at the request of sea captains who were navigating the coast. In 1905, the tower went dark, in 1952 the lighthouse was officially open to the public, and in 2022, the lighthouse was lit again and continues to shine brightly. Port Isabel Lighthouse is the only one of sixteen along the Texas coast that is still open for you to enjoy. This episode is highlighting Sea Turtle, Inc, located at 6617 Padre Boulevard here on South Padre Island, a non-profit organization with a mission to rescue, rehabilitate, and release injured sea turtles; educate the public; and assist with conservation efforts for all marine turtle species. It was founded in 1977 by Ila Loetscher and moved from her back yard to the current location in 1999. This episode highlights the Rio Grande Distillery and Brewery, located at 110a North Garcia Street, across from the Lighthouse right at the base of the Causeway. The Distillery is a one-of-a-kind establishment here in Port Isabel where you'll take a step back in time with the old-school saloon feel and unique vibe.
